Your Roadmap to Progression
Welcome to the Grading Syllabus. This page serves as your clear, step-by-step roadmap for progressing through the ranks of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. The criteria below outline the minimum mat time, technical milestones, and conceptual understanding expected at each belt level. Please remember that while technical knowledge is required, earning a promotion is also about consistency, attitude, and demonstrating practical application during live rolling.
Youth Grading Syllabus (Under 16 Years Old)
⚪ White to ⚪⚫ Grey Belts
The Grey belt ranks (Grey/White, Solid Grey, Grey/Black) are the first steps in a child's BJJ journey. The primary focus is on motor skills, listening, and basic BJJ movements.

Age Requirement (IBJJF): 4 to 15 years old.

Core Focus: Having fun, learning to fall safely, and following instructions on the mat.

Technical Requirements:

Understanding how to tap out and respect training partners.

Basic tumbling, break-falls, and shrimping.

Knowing the names of primary positions (Mount, Guard, Side Control).

Demonstrating basic escapes and positional control.

🟡 Yellow Belts
The Yellow belt ranks (Yellow/White, Solid Yellow, Yellow/Black) represent a significant step up in maturity and technical understanding.

Age Requirement (IBJJF): 7 to 15 years old.

Core Focus: Live rolling (sparring) fundamentals, balance, and defensive responsibility.

Technical Requirements:

Comfort and safety during live, fully-resisting rolls.

Ability to retain the guard and recover from bottom positions.

Execution of fundamental sweeps and basic submissions (e.g., Americana, basic chokes).

Good sportsmanship and ability to help newer students.

🟠Orange Belts
The Orange belt ranks (Orange/White, Solid Orange, Orange/Black) are for older, experienced kids. These students are developing a more complete game similar to adult white and blue belts.

Age Requirement (IBJJF): 10 to 15 years old.

Core Focus: Linking techniques, positional dominance, and mat awareness.

Technical Requirements:

Stringing together passes and submissions.

Understanding the concept of leverage and weight distribution.

Solid submission defense and early-stage escapes.

Consistent focus and disciplined behavior during class.

🟢 Green Belts
The Green belt ranks (Green/White, Solid Green, Green/Black) are the highest honor in the youth system. These teenagers are highly skilled and are actively preparing to transition into the adult blue belt ranks.

Age Requirement (IBJJF): 13 to 15 years old.

Core Focus: Advanced concepts, fluidity, and adult-level technical proficiency.

A highly developed, well-rounded game (top and bottom).

Ability to chain complex attacks and counter-attacks.

Mastery of all fundamental and intermediate techniques.

Leadership qualities on the mat and serving as a role model for the younger ranks.

Adult Grading Syllabus (Over 16 Years Old)
🔵 White to Blue Belt
The primary focus of the white belt is survival and defense. A blue belt should have a solid grasp of all fundamental positions and know how to escape bad situations.

Minimum Time Requirement (IBJJF): No minimum (typically takes 1 to 2 years of consistent training). Minimum age: 16.

Core Focus: Escaping inferior positions (Mount, Side Control, Back) and basic postural defense.

Technical Requirements:

Proficiency in foundational movements (shrimping, bridging, technical stand-up).

Ability to hold and maintain dominant positions (Mount, Side Control, Closed Guard).

Knowledge of 2–3 basic guard passes.

Knowledge of 2–3 reliable submissions (e.g., Cross Choke, Americana, Armbar) and their setups.

🟣 Blue to Purple Belt
The purple belt is often considered the first "advanced" rank. The focus shifts from pure defense to momentum, chaining attacks, and developing a personal game.

Minimum Time Requirement (IBJJF): 2 years at Blue Belt. Minimum age: 16.

Core Focus: Fluidity, combinations, and utilizing guards effectively.

Technical Requirements:

Ability to chain submissions and passes together (Action -> Reaction).

Competence in an "A-Game" (a go-to set of sweeps, passes, and submissions that work consistently).

Understanding of advanced guards (e.g., Half Guard, Spider, De La Riva, X-Guard).

High-level defense and early-stage submission escapes.

🟤 Purple to Brown Belt
Brown belt is the belt of refinement. It is about tightening up loose ends, mastering weight distribution, and fixing bad habits.

Minimum Time Requirement (IBJJF): 1.5 years at Purple Belt. Minimum age: 18.

Core Focus: Top pressure, dominant finishes, and highly efficient movement.

Technical Requirements:

Mastery of weight distribution and balance (making yourself feel "heavy").

High submission finishing rate from dominant positions.

Ability to counter your opponent’s attacks effectively.

Proficiency in leg entanglements and defense (depending on gym rules/focus).

âš« Brown to Black Belt
The black belt represents a deep, instinctual understanding of the art. A black belt moves with maximum efficiency and minimal effort.

Minimum Time Requirement (IBJJF): 1 year at Brown Belt. Minimum age: 19.

Core Focus: Intuition, counters, and absolute control.
